So sorry to hear that you are leaving to go back to USA. Family is important. I I am a widow with two adult sons and 5 grandchildren in NZ but I am trapped in the USA because I am too old for NZ to allow me to come. The “parent category” was closed from 2016 when I first applied until 2023. when it reopened the terms of entry had changed. I will sit here in Virginia on Mothers Day any receive video calls from my only living relatives the land of the long white cloud.

NZ is a beautiful place to live and the only thing we ask of those who are thinking of starting a new life here is to respect us and our country for who we are. We're not the US, UK, India, China or Europe etc, we are uniquely Aotearoa NZ so please don't come here with ideas of how we ought to be more like where you've just come from. Accept us and appreciate us for who we are and learn to fit in, however difficult that may be for some. After all, you're coming to us not the other way around. Kiwis generally are a kind and inclusive people and will accept anyone as long as they leave all their odd notions and prejudices about us behind. Get to know us and doing that you'll enjoy life here more, I promise! 😉

You can create an adoptive family in that awesome country of NZ. SOmetimes friends become our adopted family and are better than blood family.

Soon after we arrived in New Zealand, I'm pretty sure we offended someone who invited us to tea right before supper/dinner time. We were hungry for food and I didn't want caffeine right before bed. I also expected New Zealand to have fancy teas but T2 is Australian and most Kiwis haven't heard of Zealong.

I was in the same position as you 8 years ago, except I was living in Canada and am a New Zealander, U had been in Canada for 9.5 years and thought better move back to NZ as brother was having children, should be close to family.... I regret it, I wish I had stayed, I rarely see my nephew's, I live in a different town from them for work, and nothing worked out how I thought as far as family goes. Work is great, I'm doing the best professionaly and financially than I ever have, but I miss the home I built in Canada. Think so carefully, I nearly went back to Canada five years ago before I was out of time for my permanent residency and so wish I had... So think so so carefully when you get to your two year mark back in the US... I regret every day giving up my Canadian residency. Good luck! And follow YOUR heart!!! Be selfish. Please.

We've been in New Zealand 5+ years and have in our 2 year plan to move back too. Sometimes we wish we could just move back now but we're too scared we'd regret it, but sometimes feel like we'd regret not moving back now too.

I am a 6th generation kiwi and I’ll be honest that we do not want any more migrants in NZ destroying our housing market. We particularly do not want American grifters or religious nutters.

Having moved to NZ from the UK over 20 years ago, all of these points resonate with me… except the first one about the weather. I guess that depends on which part of the country you live in. Still wouldn’t want to live anywhere else, though. The introvert in me loves the small town vibe and the natural world takes centre stage where I live.

As someone who has been in customer service in New Zealand I feel like management don't value staff who give good customer service. I feel like staff are considered disposable and replaceable without thought as to what they contribute.

They switch your switches off because it's an accumulative thing and thats also the reason for no dryer that you see as just cost. Its about the nation together and you're an American and think apart. Small thinking.

Yep i agree, we are a village compared to the States, met a lady tonight at the supermarket collecting for the Salvation Army, her old boss is a lady i currently work for. Some of us Kiwis really (yes i know poor english) have no idea of how BIG the U.S is. We are lucky to have you helping Americans how to acclimate to life here.😅

All of this is ok until you have a life threatening problem that is risky to not address in good time but technically not an “immediate emergency” and you’re waiting months or even up to a year. People with cancer, autoimmune disorders that are damaging their organs, liver disease etc. Many just die because of the wait times. I don’t like the New Zealand health system, and I think most people who develop a long term chronic illness would say the same.

its a shame you are going back as the US is a mess at the moment, hopefully after November things will get better, but will take a long time to clean up the mess

My wifes family is in NZ. She is also a Kiwi. She definitely seems sad not to be around her family. We have no family here who want to be around us. The only issue i might see is making the transition with me finding a job. Not sure what i need to do ro get on my feet right away. Don't want to live with my elderly inlaws with three children. Its a big move, but if it helps my wife, im really considering it. Financially speaking, is it really worth it to live in NZ? How hard is it to find a job in NZ?
